Music and happiness at Sofia Pride 2013

25.09.2013 - September 21st was a special day for Sofia. Two weeks after the Bulgarian Unification day, a few days after the Sofia day (and also name's day for everyone with Love, Hope or Faith in their names) and a day before the Bulgarian Independence day, Sofia had another important event – the gay pride. It can be said, that it combined the characteristics of all these September holidays together – LGBT stood united, proved their independence, showed their love for both their city and country, expressed hope and faith in a better future.

Several hundred people marched together in support of LGBT rights and celebrated their essence. Ambassadors from USA, Germany and UK took turns to speak on the platform and guests of Sofia from various countries (including Gay Holidays in Bulgaria’s tourists from Israel) also attended and showed support.

The pride began on Independence square, located between the Presidency, the National Assembly and the Ministry Council. Then it moved on Dondukov boulevard, passed the National Opera, took a turn by Vassil Levsky’s monument, where it had a minute of silence for the national hero, passed the National Library and the Sofia University and finished in front of the Parliament.

While it wasn’t a huge event, it was very important for Bulgaria’s LGBT-community and one that should continue to be supported, both internally and internationally, and should be repeated annually. You can see photos from the pride on our facebook page.
